What Makes an Exceptional Private Nanny?

Thoughtful care combines sound judgment, age-appropriate experience and a genuine partnership with parents.

Put safety and development first

Look for relevant childcare experience, reliable references and training appropriate to the child’s age and needs, including current pediatric first aid and CPR where required. Ask how the nanny supports routines, play, learning and emotional development. A strong candidate can explain their approach without promising a single method will suit every child, and knows when to seek guidance from parents or qualified professionals.

Look for communication and boundaries

A nanny works closely with a family while remaining a professional. Agree how updates are shared, how parenting decisions are respected and how private information is handled. Discuss discipline, screen time, food, school communication and emergencies. Compatibility does not mean identical personalities; it means the adults can communicate honestly and keep the child’s wellbeing at the center.

Make the arrangement sustainable

Be clear about hours, child-related duties, travel and backup coverage. Flexibility should be discussed, not assumed to mean unlimited availability. A supervised, paid trial with defined expectations can help everyone assess the relationship. Complete appropriate reference and background checks with consent and in accordance with applicable law before finalizing the placement.
