Why Household Staffing Searches Fail

Many difficult searches start with an unclear brief—not a shortage of capable people.

The role asks for too much

A search becomes harder when duties, hours or travel expectations keep changing. Combining roles can be reasonable, but the workload must be achievable and the expectations transparent. Before interviewing, distinguish essential responsibilities from occasional requests. Discuss compensation, time off, accommodation and reporting lines early enough for candidates to decide whether the position fits their life as well as their skills.

Credentials overshadow compatibility

A strong résumé matters, but it does not show how someone responds to the pace and formality of your home. Ask about communication, feedback, teamwork and changing plans. Be equally candid about your own preferences. Avoid vague judgments about ‘fit’; use role-relevant examples and consistent criteria so the assessment remains fair and grounded in the work.

The process loses direction

Repeated interviews, unclear feedback and delayed decisions can leave everyone uncertain. Agree who makes the final decision, what screening is required and when a paid trial makes sense. Communicate timelines and changes promptly. After hiring, provide a proper introduction and regular check-ins: an effective search still needs thoughtful onboarding to become a lasting working relationship.
